Yokohama 2008

There will be a conference on Commutative Algebra in Yokohama, Japan, March 17–21 2008. The conference is organized by Shiro Goto, Kei-ichi Watanabe, Koji Nishida, and Kazuhiko Kurano.
The main theme of the conference is the recent trends on commutative algebra, including the following topics.

  • Blow-up algebras (Rees algebras of ideals and modules, graded rings associated to ideals, fiber cones of ideals)
  • Hilbert functions and Sally modules
  • Integral closures of ideals and rings, tight closures, multiplier ideals
  • Homological conjectures
  • Invariant theory
  • Representation theory of local algebras

For more information, please see the conference web site.

A Macaulay2 Conference

Cornell University will host the first Macaulay2 conference, organized by Macaulay2 authors Mike Stillman and Dan Grayson, together with David Eisenbud, March 16-19, 2008.
The meeting will begin with some surveys of recent work on the Boij-Soederberg conjectures, in which Macaulay2 has already played a major role. Starting the second day there will be talks of different kinds. Some will present more research for which Macaulay2 was useful or would likely be useful. Others will present useful algorithms or packages written in Macaulay2; or algorithms that would be useful in a future version of Macaulay2. Not everyone coming will be a Macaulay2 expert, so this would also be an opportunity to learn Macaulay2 or to improve your Macaulay2 skills. There is no registration fee.
For more information, including registration, hotel and travel information, and funding, please see the conference web page.

UCLA 2008: Workshop in Celebration of Mark Green's 60th Birthday

Workshop in Celebration of Mark Green’s 60th Birthday: Hodge Theory and Algebraic Geometry
February 22 – 23, 2008
UCLA Department of Mathematics
This workshop will focus on recent work by a number of distinguished researchers in Hodge theory and algebraic geometry. It is also an opportunity to recognize Mark Green’s contributions to Mathematics.
Dr. Green obtained his PhD from Princeton, where his thesis adviser was Phillip Griffiths. After teaching at Berkeley and MIT, he came to UCLA as an Assistant Professor in 1975. Dr. Green’s research has taken him into several areas of mathematics–several complex variables, differential geometry, commutative algebra, Hodge theory and algebraic geometry. He received an Alfred P. Sloan fellowship and was an invited speaker at the International Congress of Mathematicians in Berlin. Along with Eitan Tadmor, he was one of IPAM’s Founding Co-Directors. He has been Director of IPAM since 2002 and is responsible for its remarkable success.
Organizing Committee

  • David Gieseker , Chair (UCLA, Mathematics)
  • David Eisenbud (University of California, Berkeley (UC Berkeley))
  • Phillip Griffiths (Institute for Advanced Study)
  • Stan Osher (University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA), Mathematics)

Speakers

  • James Carlson (Clay Mathematics Institute)
  • Herb Clemens (Ohio State University)
  • Ron Donagi (University of Pennsylvania)
  • David Eisenbud (University of California, Berkeley (UC Berkeley))
  • Phillip Griffiths (Institute for Advanced Study)
  • Peter Jones (Yale University)
  • Robert Lazarsfeld (University of Michigan)
