Vector bundles and low-codimensional subvarieties, Trento
A School and Workshop on Vector bundles and low-codimensional subvarieties will be held in Trento, Italy, during September 11-16, 2006. The main lectures of the School will be given by Ph. Ellia (Università di Ferrara, It) and R.M. Mirò-Roig (Universitat de Barcelona, Sp), with supporting lectures by L. Costa (Universitat de Barcelona, Sp). The School is mainly aimed at Phd students and young researchers in Algebraic Geometry, introducing the participants to research, beginning from a basic level with a view towards the applications and to the most recent results. The Workshop is intended to discuss the state of the art. For more information, see the web page for the school/workshop.
Ioannina: Workshop on Combinatorics and Commutative Algebra I
The University of Ioannina, Greece, will host a Workshop on Combinatorics and Commutative Algebra, September 4-9, 2006. This is the first of a two-part workshop, the second half of which will take place in September 2007 at the University of Thessaloniki, Greece.
The Ioannina workshop will feature a series of lectures by Winfried Bruns and Tim Römer surveying and highlighting 0recent developments in Combinatorics and Commutative Algebra.
For more information please contact one of the organizers, Apostolos Thoma and Hara Charalambous, or see the workshop web page.
Brenna, Poland: Effective Methods
The conference Effective Methods in Algebraic and Analytic Geometry IV will be held 4-9 September 2006. It will take place in Hawana Pension located in the Beskidy mountains resort, Brenna, Poland. The aim is to bring together the leading specialists and the young researchers working in effective methods in algebraic and analytic geometry.
For more information, see the conference website.
37th Annual Iranian Mathematics Conference
37th Annual Iranian Mathematics Conference will be held at Azarbaijan University of Tarbiat Moallem, Tabriz, Iran, on September 2–5, 2006. The themes of the conference include, but are not limited to:
- Combinatorics
- Algebra
- Analysis
- Topology & Geometry
- PDE, ODE and Dynamical Systems
- Optimization and Numerical Analysis
For more information, including instructions for registration and abstracts of the talks, see the conference website.
IMA Thematic Year on Applications of Algebraic Geometry
The Institute for Mathematics and its Applications at the University of Minnesota will host a Thematic Year on Applications of Algebraic Geometry, September 2006 through June 2007. Various programs and workshops associated with the Thematic Year will be of interest to the commutative algebra community, including:
- 9/18-22/06, Workshop: Algorithms in algebraic geometry (organized by Alicia Dickenstein, Frank-Olaf Schreyer, and Andrew Sommese)
- 10/23-27/06, Workshop: Software for algebraic geometry (organized by Mike Stillman, Nobuki Takayama, and Jan Verschelde)
- 4/13-14/07, Tutorial: What is algebraic geometry? (organized by David Cox and Bernd Sturmfels)
IAS Special Program in Algebraic Geometry
The Institute for Advance Study will host a year-long special program in Algebraic Geometry, Fall 2006 through Spring 2007. According to the IAS website, they
don’t want to focus on any single aspect, but rather aim to have many flavors of algebraic geometry and its applications represented, including (not exhaustive list) cohomology theories, motives, moduli spaces, Shimura varieties, complex or p-adic analytic methods and singularities.
School faculty members Pierre Deligne and Phillip Griffiths will organize and lead the program.
During term II there will be a seminar and two workshops on homological mirror symmetry. The first workshop, “Mathematical Foundations of Homological Mirror Symmetry”, will take place during the period January 22-27, 2007; the second, “Applications of Homological Mirror Symmetry” from March 25 to March 31.
ICM 2006 and satellite conferences
The 2006 International Congress of Mathematicians will be held in Madrid (Spain) from 22 to 30 August, 2006. While there are no plenary lectures scheduled in commutative algebra proper, there are several that may be of interest to commutative algebraists, including (at least):
- Jean-Pierre Demailly, “Compact Kähler manifolds and transcendental techniques in algebraic geometry”, and
- Ib Madsen, “Moduli spaces from a topological viewpoint”
There will also be a Section on Algebra.
Finally, there are a number of satellite conferences scheduled around the time of the ICM, including:
- Satellite conference on Algebraic Geometry, Segovia (Spain) August 16-19
- Workshop on Triangulated Categories, Leeds (UK), August 13-19
- CIMPA-School: New Trends in Singularities, Madrid (Spain), August 14-21
Workshop on Triangulated Categories, Leeds
The University of Leeds will host a Workshop on Triangulated Categories, 13 – 19 August 2006.
The aim of this workshop is to bring together researchers from many parts of mathematics who all use triangulated categories and related structures. Hopefully, the event will promote interactions across traditional borders. Moreover, it should give postgraduate students and post docs the opportunity to learn about exciting modern developments.
Preliminary list of speakers:
- Paul Balmer (Zürich)
- John Greenlees (Sheffield)
- Srikanth Iyengar (Lincoln)
- Bernhard Keller (Paris)
- Henning Krause (Paderborn)
- Ralf Meyer (Münster)
- Amnon Neeman (Canberra)
- Dmitri Orlov (Moscow)
- Jeremy Rickard (Bristol)
- Stefan Schwede (Bonn)
The workshop is (so far) sponsored by the following institutions: Leverhulme Trust, London Mathematical Society, University of Leeds.
Organizing Committee: Thorsten Holm, Peter Jørgensen, Raphaël Rouquier.
More information is available on the conference webpage.
Fields Institute: Computational and Combinatorial Commutative Algebra
The Fields Institute will host a workshop on “Computational and Combinatorial Commutative Algebra“, July 31-August 4, 2006. The main goal will be to introduce some of the themes of recent research in the subject.
The workshop will consist of a mixture of expository and research talks. It will be preceeded by a preparatory week (July 24- July 28, 2006) on using the computational software package Macaulay 2.
If would like to attend, please email ayong@math.umn.edu to register. (There is no registration fee.)
