Vikram B. Mehta, 1946–2014

We are saddened to announce that Vikram B. Mehta passed away on June 04, 2014. Professor Mehta was a senior member of the Mathematics Faculty at Tata Institute of fundamental Research (TIFR) in Mumbai. He was a member of the Indian National Academy of Sciences and a recipient of the SS Bhatnagar Award. Mehta was known mainly for his work with the study of semi-stable bundles and questions of Schubert varieties, and particularly for the notion of Frobenius splittings in algebraic geometry.

NonLinear Algebra, Berlin

There will be a Workshop on “NonLinear Algebra: Interactions among Algebraic Geometry, Combinatorics, Commutative Algebra, Convexity, Statistics, Optimization and Computational Biology” in Berlin, Germany, May 29-30, 2015.
This is the kickoff workshop for the project on NonLinear Algebra that is funded for 2015-2018 by the Einstein Foundation. The organizers are Fatemeh Mohammadi (Osnabrück University) and Bernd Sturmfels (UC Berkeley). For more information see the web page for the workshop.

KUMUNUjr 2014

Registration closes March 22nd. To be considered for funding or a 20 minute talk, please register by March 8th (with an abstract if you’d like to talk).
Dates: April 26-27, 2014
Location: University of Nebraska-Lincoln
Website: http://www.math.unl.edu/~jlutz3/KUMUNUjr/2014/
Confirmed Speakers (as of February 19, 2014):

  • Justin Hoffmeier (University of Missouri-Kansas City)
  • Van Nguyen (Texas A&M University)
  • Denise Rangel (University of Texas at Arlington)
  • Sarang Sane (University of Kansas)
  • Zheng Yang (University of Nebraska)

KUMUNUjr provides an opportunity for young mathematicians studying commutative algebra in the Midwest to share their research and expertise with one another. Our discipline is an active one, with connections to algebraic geometry, cluster algebras, combinatorics, homological algebra, representation theory, statistics, and other areas. Furthermore, midwestern commutative algebra research continues to reflect the activity and diversity of the commutative algebra research community.
Through funding from the NSF, we anticipate being able to provide at least partial funding for travel and lodging.
Feel free to contact any of the organizers with questions.
