Women In Commutative Algebra 2019, Banff

From Emily Witt:

I am pleased to announce the collaborative research workshop Women in Commutative Algebra (WICA) 2019, which will take place from October 20-25, 2019 at the Banff International Research Station (BIRS).
Forty-two women researchers will collaborate in small groups on cutting edge topics in commutative algebra. The participants will range from early-career mathematicians to senior leaders in the field. The major goal of this workshop is to advance commutative algebra by producing first-rate research of broad interest. In addition, the workshop will also promote, and develop, research networks among women algebraists.
Tentative research topics, and group leaders, are as follows:

  • Combinatorics and rings of differential operators (Christine Berkesch, University of Minnesota and Laura Matusevich, Texas A&M University)
  • Methods in prime characteristic (Karen Smith, University of Michigan and Emily Witt, University of Kansas)
  • Combinatorial commutative algebra (Sara Faridi, Dalhousie University and Susan Morey, Texas State University)
  • Rees algebras (Elisa Gorla, Université de Neuchâtel and Claudia Polini, University of Notre Dame)
  • Finite resolutions and complexes (Claudia Miller, Syracuse University and Alexandra Seceleanu, University of Nebraska)
  • Tropical commutative algebra (Diane Maclagan, University of Warwick and Josephine Yu, Georgia Institute of Technology)

The workshop organizers are Karen Smith (University of Michigan), Sandra Spiroff (University of Mississippi), Irena Swanson (Reed College), and Emily Witt (University of Kansas).
We ask researchers who are interested in participating to fill out the WICA Interest Form linked from the workshop website by April 1.
Please feel free to forward this announcement widely!

BRIDGES: Building Relationships for an Inclusive and Diverse Group of Emerging Students

The AWM student chapter at the University of Utah is organizing a conference, May 20-22, 2020, aimed towards early graduate students and advanced undergraduate students interested in representation theory, number theory, and commutative algebra.
The goal of this conference is to:

  • Foster a sense of community amongst underrepresented groups in mathematics,
  • Introduce possible research areas,
  • Expose the participants to role models and possible mentors.

Potential funding may be available for travel and accommodation for 40 participants, priority will be given to participants from underrepresented groups. To be considered for funding please register before January 31st, 2020. More information can be found at the conference website:
