Bilbao joint meeting RSME-SCM-SEMA-SIMAI-UMI

Five mathematical organizations have joined to organize their First Joint International Meeting in Bilbao, Spain, from June 30 to July 4, 2014. They are: UMI (Italian Mathematical Union), SIMAI (Italian Society for Applied and Industrial Mathematics), RSME (Royal Spanish Mathematical Society), SCM (Catalan Mathematical Society), and SEMA (Spanish Society for Applied Mathematics). The joint meeting will include a Recent Developments in Commutative Algebra. The session is organized by:

  • Maria Evelina Rossi (University of Genoa, Italy)

The aim of the special session is to disseminate recent developments in commutative algebra, to foster collaboration among the participants and to set up new directions for further investigations. It will focus, among others, on the following topics:

  • Characteristic p methods.
  • Structure of the free resolutions.
  • Hilbert functions.
  • Groebner bases and determinantal ideals.
  • Homological methods.

Pragmatic 2014, Catania

Subject: “Local cohomology and syzygies of affine algebras”
The goal of the school is to introduce the participants to some recent developments in the study of local cohomology and syzygies. We will study the local cohomology of polynomial rings with respect to arbitrary ideals and, in particular, how these may be regarded as modules over rings of differential operators. Applications of local cohomology to questions on the minimal number of defining equations of algebraic sets will be described. A second topic will be recent developments concerning the degrees of syzygies of affine algebras and their Koszul homology, with a focus on Koszul algebras, like Veronese subrings of polynomial rings. Strong versions of Koszulness and comparison among them will be discussed as well as some computational issues.

The “Encuentros de Álgebra Computacional y Aplicaciones, EACA” (Meetings on Computer Algebra and Applications) are organized by the Spanish Red EACA, a thematic network devoted to symbolic computation, computer algebra and applications, partially supported by the Accion Complementaria MTM2011-13133-E . This XIV Meeting (biannual since 2002) is the natural continuation of those organized in Santander (1995), Sevilla (1996), Granada (1997), Sigüenza (1998), Tenerife (1999), Barcelona (2000), Ezcaray (2001), Valladolid (2002), Santander (2004), Sevilla (2006), Granada (2008), Santiago de Compostela (2010), and Alcalá de Henares (2012). Participation at EACA 2014 can be done through an oral presentation. Everyone doing research and/or applications around the topics of the meeting is welcome to participate.
Contributions should present recent and original research work. Authors willing to submit a proposal for an oral communication at EACA 2014 should send an extended abstract of their contribution, with no more than 4 pages, by February 21st, 2014. Authors will receive notification of acceptance/rejection of their communication as well as on the possible changes requested by the Scientific Committee, by April 15th, 2014. A final version of the accepted abstracts will be requested for inclusion in a book of Proceedings.
For each talk 20 minutes are allowed, plus 5 minutes for discussion. We encourage participants to use English in the written documents used in their presentations.

Students’ fee: 80 Euros
The registration fee includes access to the conference, conference materials and coffee breaks. A social dinner is scheduled on Thursday, June 19th, with an additional cost of 30 Euros per person.

RSME Grants: A limited number of grants by RSME (Real Sociedad Matemática Española) will be available. They are targeted to senior undergraduate/graduate students, or young researchers attending to the conference, and would primarily cover the registration fees.
Local Grants: Some lodging in shared rooms at Residència d’Investigadors will be available for young participants attending the conference who apply for financial support.
The deadline to apply for financial support is April 25th.

Macaulay2 Research Meeting and School, UIUC

update 19 March 2014: there is funding available both for those wishing to attend the 3 day research meeting and for those wishing to attend that and the Macaulay2 school! Those who wish to apply for funding should do so by April 4, 2014. See below.


There will be a Macaulay2 school and research meeting at University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign, from Monday, June 16, 2014 through Friday, June 20, 2014 with Sunday, June 15 and Saturday, June 21 serving as the travel days.
Research Meeting
The research meeting will take place from June 18-20, open to all who wish to attend, with talks ranging from high-level descriptions of research in where computational algebra plays an important role to descriptions of advances in computational algebra systems and packages. There is a large and vital community of people using the system in a wide variety of ways, from computational biology to string theory to algebraic geometry. Because the spread of fields is great, many do not know the techniques that the others are using. One purpose of the research meeting is to bring together these disparate communities and foster bridges between them. At this point, speakers include

Macaulay2 School
The school will take place June 16-17, and space is limited. The school will center on three tutorials (Greg Smith on Toric Varieties, Dan Bates on Numerical Algebraic Geometry, and a third TBA). The organizers plan to include a mix of advanced graduate students, recent postdocs, and some senior people who are relatively inexperienced with Macaulay2 for hands on training. Funding is available; indicate that you wish to attend on the registration form mentioned above. Please also include a short statement of purpose on why you wish to attend. Graduate students and postdocs should also arrange for a letter of endorsement from their advisor to be sent to Sonja Mapes <smapes1@nd.edu>.
Those who wish to attend the school should commit to being present for all days of the school and conference, and should install Macaulay2 on the laptops they will bring with them to the school and ensure that it runs.

Vikram B. Mehta, 1946–2014

We are saddened to announce that Vikram B. Mehta passed away on June 04, 2014. Professor Mehta was a senior member of the Mathematics Faculty at Tata Institute of fundamental Research (TIFR) in Mumbai. He was a member of the Indian National Academy of Sciences and a recipient of the SS Bhatnagar Award. Mehta was known mainly for his work with the study of semi-stable bundles and questions of Schubert varieties, and particularly for the notion of Frobenius splittings in algebraic geometry.
