KUMUNUjr 2

The University of Nebraska–Lincoln will host the second KUMUNUjr conference this spring. Registration opens January 23 and closes March 15; to be considered for funding or a 20 minute talk, please register by March 1 (with an abstract if you’d like to talk).
Dates: April 20-21
Location: University of Nebraska–Lincoln
Website: http://www.math.unl.edu/~s-acroll1/KUMUNUjr/2013/
Confirmed Speakers (as of January 15, 2013):

  • Olgur Celikbas (MU)
  • Kosmas Diveris (St. Olaf)
  • Jason Hardin (UNL)
  • Richard Wicklein (NDSU)

KUMUNUjr provides an opportunity for young mathematicians studying commutative algebra in the Midwest to share their research and expertise with one another. Our discipline is an active one, with connections to algebraic geometry, cluster algebras, combinatorics, homological algebra, representation theory, statistics, and other areas. Furthermore, midwestern commutative algebra research continues to reflect the activity and diversity of the macrocosm of the commutative algebra research community.
More information can be found on the conference in general at last year’s website:
http://www.math.ku.edu/~bstone/KUMUNUjr/2012/
We anticipate being able to provide at least partial funding for travel and lodging since our NSF application was successful (see the award: http://www.nsf.gov/awardsearch/showAward?AWD_ID=1303248)!
Feel free to contact any of the organizers with questions.
KUMUNUjr planning committee:

  • Amanda Croll (s-acroll1@math.unl.edu)
  • Courtney Gibbons (s-cgibbon5@math.unl.edu)
  • Jason Lutz (jlutz3@math.unl.edu)

Andrei Zelevinsky 1953–2013

AZWe are saddened by the news that Andrei Zelevinsky passed away on April 10.
Andrei was best known for his work with Gelfand and Kapranov on “Discriminants, Resultants, and Multidimensional Determinants” and for the introduction with Fomin of the theory of cluster algebras. There is a conference in his honor planned in just two weeks. We will update this post if there is any change to that plan.
update: The webpage for the conference says that the conference will continue as previously planned, in memory of Andrei.

Char p in AG, London

Imperial College (London, UK) will host a workshop on “Characteristic p methods in Algebraic Geometry”, April 2-5 2013. The main lecturers are James McKernan and Karl Schwede, and invited speakers include Nick Shepherd-Barron and Chenyang Xu (to be confirmed).
The participants are expected to be graduate students and young postdocs. The workshop consists of some lectures by the two main lecturers, as well as talks by participants and a poster session.
For more information, including support and travel arrangements, see the workshop web page.
