CIMPA: "CA with Applications to Statistics and Coding Theory", Zacatecas

The 2018 CIMPA Research School – Latinamerica: “Commutative Algebra with Applications to Statistics and Coding Theory” will be held June 25 – July 6, 2018, in Zacatecas, Mexico.
Participants will be provided with the basics on the combinatorics of binomial ideals and its relations with coding theory and algebraic statistics problems through courses and talks on the following topics:

  • Algebraic Statistics for random graphs and networks
  • Algebraic-geometric and toric codes
  • Syzygies and monomial ideals
  • Binomial and toric ideals and its combinatorics
  • Algebraic Statistics and Applications to Biology

Combinatorial Algebraic Geometry Retrospective Workshop
June 18 – 22, 2018, The Fields Institute

This is a follow up workshop to the Fields Institute semester dedicated to Combinatorial Algebraic Geometry. This workshop will highlight the many interactions between combinatorics and algebraic geometry in the specific realms of toric and tropical geometry, Newton Okounkov bodies, combinatorial aspects of moduli spaces, and effectivity and positivity questions in algebraic geometry. The program will feature talks, a poster session, and moderated problem sessions.
The week prior to the workshop there will be a week long summer school at McMaster University organized by Megumi Harada and Adam Van Tuyl. In particular, Ph.D. students and postdocs are encouraged to attend both events.

Graduate Summer School in Algebraic Group Actions

One of the goals of this summer school is to capitalize on the successful Fields Institute “Combinatorial Algebraic Geometry” Major Thematic Program in Fall 2016 and to offer beginning graduate students a chance to get an in-depth introduction to some of the exciting topics within Combinatorial Algebraic Geometry during the week before the Retrospective Workshop (to be held June 18–22, 2018 at the Fields Institute) on the same theme.

Dr. Kaveh and Dr. Hofscheier will each give a 5-day series of lectures on these topics of interest to Combinatorial Algebraic Geometry. We expect Dr. Kaveh to focus on Newton-Okounkov bodies and tropical geometry, with Dr. Hofscheier focusing primarily on spherical geometry. Lectures will be held in the morning, with problem sessions and informal discussions in the afternoon.

Macaulay2 Workshop, Leipzig

A Macaulay2 workshop will take place at Max Planck Institute in Leipzig in 2018 from Monday June 4th to Friday June 8th. The purpose of the workshop is to bring the Macaulay2 developers Dan Grayson and Mike Stillman together with those who would like to share or to develop their skills on Macaulay2. The conference will feature a series of ten lectures by Professor David Cox on topics including elimination theory, polynomial systems in the real world, geometric modeling, geometric constraint theory, and chemical reaction networks. Follow up lectures will be given by other leading experts including Carlos D’Andrea, Jonathan Hauenstein, Hal Schenck, Jessica Sidman, and Alicia Dickenstein. The conference will also feature a problem session, software demonstration, and poster session.
The CBMS and NSF have generously provided funding for the conference, including funds for travel and lodging of attendees (NSF grant DMS-1741730) . Sponsored by the Conference Board of the Mathematical Sciences, each five-day conference in the Regional Conference series features a distinguished lecturer who delivers ten lectures on a topic of important current research in one sharply focused area of the mathematical sciences; the lecturer subsequently prepares an expository monograph based upon these lectures. The principal lecturer for this conference will be David A. Cox, the William J. Walker Professor of Mathematics at Amherst College. Professor Cox is a world-renowned master expositor and award-winning author of several popular and highly-cited books in the mathematical area of applied algebraic geometry. Professor Cox’s lectures will discuss historical developments in this field in light of modern perspectives, leading right up to current research and applications to such diverse fields as computer aided design, rigidity of mechanical linkages, and chemical reaction networks. Each pair of lectures by Professor Cox will develop a chosen topic and be followed by a further lecture by a specialist he has hand-picked to provide a deeper look at the forefront of current work on that topic.​

The seventh annual KUMUNU jr will be held at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln, April 28-29, 2018. Inspired by the success of the KUMUNU algebra conferences in the midwest, KUMUNU jr seeks to promote interaction of graduate students and post docs in the area of commutative algebra. This conference is a forum for students and post docs to share their ideas with others and to initiate collaboration.
