30th Arkansas Spring Lecture Series
The 30th annual Arkansas Spring Lecture Series in the Mathematical Sciences, at the University of Arkansas, Fayetteville, will be held April 14 – 16, 2005. The topic for this year’s Lecture Series is “Recent Developments in Tight Closure.” The principal lecturers are
- Mel Hochster (University of Michigan)
- Craig Huneke (University of Kansas).
- Invited speakers include
- Holger Brenner (University of Sheffield)
- Nobuo Hara (Tohoku University)
- Gennady Lyubeznik (University of Minnesota)
- Anurag Singh (Georgia Tech University)
- Shunsuke Takagi (Kyushu University).
There will also be a public lecture by Mel Hochster, “Women in Mathematics”.

Northcott
The London Times of Monday April 11th announces the sad news that Professor Douglas Geoffrey Northcott FRS, who was Professor of Pure Mathematics at the University of Sheffield from 1952 until his retirement in 1982, and whose name is well known to many commutative algebraists, died on Friday April 8th, 2005, aged 88 years. Workshop on Cohen-Macaulay Rings at Ovidius University of Constanta
From April 5 to April 10, 2005, there will be a Workshop on Cohen-Macaulay Rings and Related Structures at Faculty of Mathematics and Informatics, Ovidius University of Constanta, Romania. The workshop is organized by Department of Mathematics, University of Kaiserslautern, supported by Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft, in cooperation with Institute of Mathematics “Simion Stoilow” of the Romanian Academy , Faculty of Mathematics and Informatics, Bucharest University, Faculty of Mathematics and Informatics, Ovidius University, Constanta, and Romanian Mathematical Society.

Ottawa Workshop on Resolutions, Inverse Systems, and Coinvariants
The Fields Institute is sponsoring the 2nd Workshop on Resolutions, Inverse Systems, and Coinvariants at the University of Ottawa, January 13-15, 2005. The Workshop brings together Algebraic Combinatorialists and Commutative Algebraists to discuss relationships between special cases of the notion of Macaulay’s inverse systems in Commutative Algebra, and coinvariant spaces studied in Algebraic Combinatorics and Representation Theory.
Invited speakers include François Bergeron (UQAM), Nantel Bergeron (York), Tony Geramita (Queen’s), and Christophe Reutenauer (UQAM).
