SUMMARY:D-modules\, Group Actions\, and Frobenius: Computing on Singularities\, ICERM (Virtual)
DESCRIPTION:There will be a topical workshop “D-modules\, Group Actions\, and Frobenius: Computing on Singularities” at ICERM (now VIRTUAL ONLY) from Aug 9-13\, 2021. \n“Our goal for this workshop is to discuss computational aspects and new challenges in singularity theory\, focusing on special varieties that arise from group actions\, canonical maps\, or universal constructions. By bringing together geometers\, algebraists\, and invariant theorists\, we will address problems from multiple perspectives. These will include comparisons of composition chains for D- and F-modules\, the impact of group actions on singularity invariants\, and the structure of differential operators on singularities in varying characteristics.” \nHere is the website of the event: https://icerm.brown.edu/topical_workshops/tw-21-dmga/. It has links to apply for participation\, we encourage applications before July 20.

SUMMARY:Fourth International Meeting on Integer-Valued Polynomials\, France
DESCRIPTION:THE FOURTH INTERNATIONAL (HYBRID) MEETING ON INTEGER-VALUED POLYNOMIALS in Commutative and Non-Commutative Algebra and Related Problems will take place at the CIRM in Marseille\, France\, from 7 to 11 December 2020. \nThis meeting comes after three previous meetings about the same topic\, also organized in the CIRM in 1990\, 2000 et 2010. Each of these meetings helped progress in research on ”Integer-valued Polynomials” in various areas.\nThe subject goes back a century ago\, with two papers of G. Pólya and A. Ostrowski published in 1919 in the Journal de Crelle. At the beginning\, an integer-valued polynomial is a polynomial with coefficients in a number field\, that takes integer values on the integers of the field and the study of the algebra of integer-valued polynomials takes place between commutative algebra and number theory. Since that time\, interactions have been observed in various areas: \n– Combinatoric with the generalized factorials of Manjul Bhargava;\n– Discrete mathematics with\, for example\, the polynomial parametrization of sets of integers;\n– Number theory with the study of Polya fields and Polya groups and the use of the class field theory\, the Lubin-Tate formal group laws and Dirichlet series;\n– Commutative algebra: minimal generating sets\, factorizations\, spectrum\, etc…;\n– p-adic analysis with the construction of polynomial normal bases of spaces of ultrametric functions;\n– Dynamical systems: discrete polynomial systems;\n– Non-commutative algebra: algebra of polynomials with coefficients in matrices or quaternions. \nThe main goal of this fourth meeting is to allow researchers from different countries to meet and work together on those new areas. A particular atten-tion will be given to students and young reseachers who will be encouraged highly to present their research. \nWebsite: https://conferences.cirm-math.fr/2229.html

SUMMARY:Free Resolutions and Representation Theory\, ICERM
DESCRIPTION:There will be a workshop Aug 3-7\, 2020 at ICERM on: Free Resolutions and Representation Theory.\nAbstract\nThe structure of free resolutions plays an important role in analyzing singularities of varieties of low codimension. Codimension 2 Cohen-Macaulay varieties (resp. codimension 3 Gorenstein varieties) come from rank conditions on an n x (n+1) matrix (resp. a skew-symmetric (2n+1) x (2n+1) matrix).\nThis workshop seeks to push such results to Cohen-Macaulay varieties of codimension 3 and Gorenstein varieties of codimension 4.\nThis problem turns out to be related to the classification of semi-simple Lie algebras. These new methods allow one to create a ‘map’ of free resolutions of a given format. The calculations that arise are very demanding and require new computational methods involving both commutative algebra and representation theory.\nOrganizers \n\nLars Christensen\, Texas Tech University\nClaudia Miller\, Syracuse University\nSteven Sam\, University of California\, San Diego\nJerzy Weyman\, University of Connecticut\n\nSupport\nICERM welcomes applications from faculty\, postdocs\, graduate students\, industry scientists\, and other researchers who wish to participate. Some funding may be available for travel and lodging. Graduate students who apply must have their advisor submit a statement of support in order to be considered.\nFor more information\, see the web site:\nhttps://icerm.brown.edu/topical_workshops/tw-20-frrt/

SUMMARY:WARTHOG 2020
DESCRIPTION:The 2020 WARTHOG workshop will be on the topic of “Infinite-dimensional methods in commutative algebra”.\nIt will be held July 27-31\, 2020 at the University of Oregon\, and will be led by Andrew Snowden. More information can be found here:\nhttps://pages.uoregon.edu/belias/WARTHOG/infcomm/index.html\nWARTHOG is a summer graduate school which is focused on a single topic. The goal is to get deep and reach a new and exciting result\, while meeting a lot of broadly applicable math along the way… but starting from the basics. We get there with a strong emphasis on exercises.\nThe workshop is intended for graduate students at all levels and in all fields who have an interest in algebra (and have completed their graduate algebra sequence). Postdocs are also welcome to apply.

SUMMARY:28th National School on Algebra\, Bucharest
DESCRIPTION:update 5 April 20: This event has been cancelled. \nThe National School on Algebra\, the 28th edition\, will take place in Bucharest\, 8-12th of June\, right after the conference\, part of the same event and thus having the same title “Homological trends in Commutative Algebra and Algebraic Geometry”. \nThe website for the school is math.univ-ovidius.ro/sna/edition.aspx?cat=GeneralInfo&itemID=15 . \nThere will be 5 mini-courses\, three one-hour lectures each\, delivered by Alexandru Constantinescu (Freie Universität Berlin\, Germany)\, Florian Enescu (Georgia State University\, USA)\, Gavril Farkas (Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin\, Germany)\, Claudiu Raicu (Notre Dame University\, USA)\, Jerzy Weyman (Jagiellonian University\, Poland). \nHere are the mini-abstracts of each of the 5 mini-courses: \nAlexandru Constantinescu: The deformation theory of an affine singularity is governed by the so-called versal deformation. This is an object through which all other deformations factor. In the setting of affine toric geometry\, this whole process can be translated in the language of semigroups. Our first aim will be to construct abstractly a universal (flat) extension of a pair of semigroups. We will then see how this universal extension explicitly looks like for semigroups arising from affine toric singularities\, and how it relates to Minkowski decompositions of polyhedra. Finally\, we will connect these universal objects to the graded components of the versal deformation of a toric singularity. \nFlorian Enescu: Homological methods in positive characteristic commutative algebra. In the past several decades\, there has been a flurry of developments in commutative algebra and algebraic geometry in positive characteristic related to the Frobenius homomorphism. New theories such as tight closure theory and Hilbert-Kunz theory have brought numerous advances and applications. A significant part of these ideas rely on homological methods\, in connection to local cohomology and injective hulls of local rings\, and they currently represent an exciting area of research in commutative algebra. \nGavril Farkas: TBA \nClaudiu Raicu: TBA \nJerzy Weyman: TBA
