SUMMARY:Research\, Mentorship\, and Community for Current and Future Under-represented Algebraists
DESCRIPTION:The Research\, Mentorship\, and Community for Current and Future Under-represented Algebraists conference will be held Saturday\, May 31st and Sunday\, June 1st\, 2025 at Benedictine University in Lisle\, Illinois. This conference has three major themes: Mentoring and Transitioning Across the Profession; Belongingness in Algebra\, Opening the Community\, and Supporting New Researchers; and Innovation and Impact for Future Researchers. These themes were inspired\, in part\, by the work of Dr. Aloysius “Loek” Helminck\, a respected and prolific researcher and advocate for increasing representation in mathematics. The conference will also celebrate Dr. Helminck’s 70th birthday.\n\nFor more details\, see the conference website.\nDeadline to apply for support is April 30th.

SUMMARY:MSRI Summer School at the Fields Institute
DESCRIPTION:There will be an SLMath Summer School at the Fields Institute in Toronto in Summer 2025\, the Séminaire de Mathématiques Supérieures (SMS) 2025 : An Introduction to Recent Trends in Commutative Algebra. The school will be held on June 2 – 13\, 2025\, and it is part of the Spring 2025 Fields Institute thematic program in Commutative Algebra and Applications. Students can either be nominated by their departments to attend\, if their department is an institutional member of SLMath (nominations start on December 1\, 2024) or apply to attend here by February 28\, 2025. \nMore information can be found on the school’s website. \nThe 2025 SMS will allow graduate students to learn about a number of recent trends and advances in the field of commutative algebra. The aim of the SMS is to provide an “on-ramp” for graduate students interested in algebra\, combinatorics\, and/or algebraic combinatorics to learn more about commutative algebra’s interaction with these fields. The introductory courses will introduce fundamental skills in commutative algebra\, the more intermediate courses will expose students to cutting-edge research in the field. The school will focus on four topics within commutative algebra: Combinatorial Methods\, Homological Methods\, Computational Methods\, and Characteristic p Methods. The SMS will provide both a series of introductory lectures and intermediate/advanced lectures from leaders in one of the four areas. The lectures will include a series of problem sessions that will allow participants to develop and hone their skills in these areas\, which will be especially helpful for new people to the field. Participants will be encouraged to work collaboratively\, both to enhance their own mathematical networks as well as to promote future collaborations beyond the school.

SUMMARY:Modern Developments in Matroid Theory
DESCRIPTION:Recently\, a number of long-standing conjectures in the field of matroid theory\, and more generally in combinatorics\, have been resolved by the\ninjection of algebraic geometry and Hodge theory into the subject. A non-exhaustive list includes Adiprasito\, Huh\, and Katz’s resolution of the Heron–Rota–Welsh conjecture\, the proof of Dowling–Wilson’s top-heavy conjecture by Braden\, Huh\, Matherne\, Proudfoot\, and Wang\, as well as the proof of Brylawski and Dawson’s conjectures by Ardila\, Denham and Huh. \nThis June (8-13)\, the Oberwolfach Seminar 2524b will present these (and\nrelated) novel developments in an approachable way to graduate students and postdocs. Participants will learn some rich and deep modern algebra\, and leave equipped with an understanding of how this mathematics continues to be applied to solve a diverse range of problems. Its occasion is especially timely due to the vibrant developments the theme is currently undergoing ever since it took off in the wake of June Huh’s 2022 Fields Medal\, which was awarded partly based on the\nachievements noted above. \nMore details can be found on the workshop website
