SUMMARY:Purity\, Approximation Theory and Spectra
DESCRIPTION:There will be a workshop and a conference on “Purity\, Approximation Theory and Spectra” in Cetraro\, Italy\, on May 13-17\, 2024. The conference is dedicated to Manolo Saorin on the occasion of his 65th birthday. \nPurity and approximation theory influence a wide range of areas in mathematics including model theory of modules\, silting and tilting theory\, cotorsion pairs and abelian model structures and many more. Moreover\, related classification problems in abelian and triangulated categories are strongly connected with spaces such as Ziegler spectra\, Balmer spectra and prime spectra. This event aims to bring together researchers with an interest in these topics to share their different viewpoints and approaches. \nThis event is divided into a workshop and a conference. The workshop will include five mini lecture series (two hours each) covering a range of fundamental topics. \nLecture series speakers:\nSergio Estrada (University of Murcia)\nLorna Gregory (University of East Anglia)\nIvo Herzog (Ohio State University)\nHenning Krause (University of Bielefeld)\nJan Šaroch (Charles University\, Prague) \nConference speakers:\nNatalia Castellana (Autonomous University of Barcelona)\nSeptimiu Crivei (Babes-Bolyai University)\nAmnon Neeman (University of Milan)\nJan Stovicek (Charles University\, Prague)\nSimone Virili (Autonomous University of Barcelona)\nAlexandra Zvonareva (The Czech Academy of Sciences) \nMore information can be found on the conference website. \nOrganisers:\nLidia Angeleri Hügel (University of Verona)\, Rosanna Laking (University of Verona)\, Francesca Mantese (University of Verona)\, Tsutomu Nakamura (Mie University) \n

SUMMARY:Roots of Unity 2024
DESCRIPTION:The applications for the 2024 Roots of Unity workshop\, held June 10-14\, 2024 at ICERM in Providence\, RI are now open. Applications are due March 13 and can be submitted through ICERM’s CUBE page. \nThis is the second Roots of Unity workshop\, organized by Christine Berkesch\, Michelle Manes\, Priyam Patel\, Candice Price\, and Bianca Viray and its goal is to support graduate students\, particularly women and nonbinary students of color\, in their transition to independent learning and research.  This transition is a crucial and often jarring point in every graduate student’s career and can be even more difficult for students from marginalized groups\, who often have smaller support systems and may face an actively unsupportive environment at their institution. The goal of this workshop is to support\, mentor\, and guide students at this crucial stage in their career. During the workshop\, mentors will guide the student participants through the (often very daunting!) experience of trying to read a paper without being an expert in the area. The participants will be broken into small working groups\, each focused on a recent paper in their area of interest. Each group will be assisted throughout the week by mentors\, both early career mathematicians (late stage graduate students or postdocs) and faculty members. The topics covered in this workshop will be Number Theory\, Combinatorics\, Commutative Algebra\, and Geometry/Topology. \nThe professional development component of the Roots of Unity Workshop will focus on practical tools for navigating a research career\, while building community and increasing access to professionals or near-peers. These will include in-person panels and activities during the workshop and follow-up (virtual) activities throughout the year to continue nurturing the community and connections. \nThe program is tailored to support women of color\, and our strategies reflect this priority. However\, any graduate student in their first three years of study who believes that this workshop will benefit them are invited to apply. We especially encourage applications from students of color who are women\, nonbinary\, and/or gender fluid. \n

SUMMARY:ISSAC + Macaulay2 mini-school + Workshop on Differential Algebra
DESCRIPTION:The 2024 edition of ISSAC\, a yearly conference on algebra and computation\, will be held at NC State University on July 16-19. There will also be two satellite events: a Macaulay2 mini-school before the conference\, and Workshop on Differential Algebra. Here are the websites for the three events: \nMacaulay2 mini-school\, July 14-15\nISSAC\, July 16-19\nWorkshop on Differential Algebra\, July 20-22 \nISSAC is a yearly conference on algebra and computation. Part of the program are “short communications” consisting of a ~4 page extended abstract and a poster presentation. These are typically used by junior participants to publicize work that is either in-progress or already published. The deadline to apply to present a poster is May 14. PhD students at US universities will be eligible for travel funding provided (through the NSA) once registration opens. \nNSF support is pending for the two-day Macaulay2 “mini-school”\, and graduate students can apply by May 14 to be considered for funding.

SUMMARY:Master Class on Derived Category Methods in Ring Theory
DESCRIPTION:There will be a Master Class on Derived Category Methods in Ring Theory\, with lectures by Lars Winther Christensen and Henrik Holm\, at Aarhus University on August 13-16\, 2024 (travel dates 12 and 17 August 2024). For more information\, see the masterclass website\, and register here. \nLimited support is available for PhD students and postdocs on a first come basis. Please contact Peter Jørgensen at peter.jorgensen@math.au.dk to inquire about support. \n  \nAbstract: Starting from the category of modules over a ring we construct the derived category and the accompanying derived versions of the Hom and tensor product functors. We show how this framework applies to studies of rings and modules. In particular\, we demonstrate how\, even if one is focused on modules\, the derived category is the natural context for homological studies. We also show how ring-theoretic properties\, such as being Iwanaga-Gorenstein or regular\, are reflected in the derived category. The intended audience are PhD students\, postdocs\, and anyone else wishing to learn these methods. There will be eight lectures and several problem sessions.
